Know what your backup contains.
A controller project, parameter export and HMI runtime backup are different records. An HMI backup that can restore a compatible panel may not be an editable engineering project. Recovery options depend on the specific device and software.
Record the hardware reference, firmware, software version and date of each available backup. Keep the related drawings and a description of the operating sequence with the records.
Separate recovery from modification.
Before changes are proposed, establish authorised access and compare the available project information with the installed system where the equipment supports it. Passwords, protected blocks, missing source files and version differences may limit the scope.
Diagnostics can help distinguish device and module faults from process behaviour and program errors. That distinction guides whether the next step is a hardware check, a signal investigation or an authorised engineering review.
Plan verification as part of the work.
Agree which affected functions need testing after restoration or modification, who approves the change and how the final version will be recorded. Preserve the prior state where possible so a documented recovery option remains available.
This is an overview for planning and enquiries. Equipment-specific work follows the applicable manufacturer documentation and approved site procedures.
